
If your Bend home was built before the mid-90s, look at your pipes
Grab a flashlight and find where your water lines are exposed — the crawl space, the garage, under the kitchen sink, near the water heater. What you see there tells you a lot about how much peace of mind you actually have.
Two pipe materials common in Central Oregon homes built from the 1970s through the 1990s have earned bad reputations for good reason. One fails suddenly and floods houses. The other fails slowly and chokes your water pressure while rusting from the inside. Neither gets better with age. If you own an older home in Bend, knowing which one you have — and having a plan — is worth an afternoon.
The two materials to know
Polybutylene (PB)
A gray (sometimes white or blue) flexible plastic pipe installed roughly between 1978 and 1995. It was cheap and easy to run, and it was used in millions of homes before class-action lawsuits pulled it off the market. The problem: PB reacts with the chlorine and oxidants in normal treated water, which makes it brittle over time. It flakes and weakens from the inside, then fails — often at a fitting, often without warning. You typically can't see the damage coming from the outside.
Galvanized steel
Steel pipe coated in zinc, standard in homes built before the 1960s and still found in some later remodels. The zinc eventually wears away and the steel underneath corrodes. Rust builds up inside the pipe, narrowing it like plaque in an artery. It fails slowly rather than dramatically, but it degrades your water and your pressure the whole way down.
How to tell what you've got
You can often identify your pipe yourself before you ever call anyone:
- Color and feel. PB is dull gray plastic, flexible, usually joined with metal or plastic crimp fittings. Galvanized is dull silver-gray metal, rigid, with threaded joints that may show rust or white corrosion.
- The scratch test on metal pipe. Scratch an exposed metal line with a screwdriver or a coin. A dull gray that stays gray points to galvanized steel. (Copper scratches to a bright penny color; that's the good stuff and not what we're worried about here.)
- Rusty or discolored water, especially brownish water first thing in the morning after the house has sat overnight — a classic galvanized symptom.
- Weak pressure that's gotten worse over the years, particularly at upstairs fixtures or when two taps run at once.
- Visible corrosion, flaking, or crimped gray plastic at the joints.
