Why Your Drains Keep Clogging (and When It's the Sewer Line)

Chemical cleaners burn a hole through the middle of a soft blockage — enough to drain — while leaving the ring around the pipe wall intact. The pipe is still narrowed, so it clogs again fast. If several fixtures act up together, or the lowest ones in the house do, the blockage is downstream in the main line that carries everything out to the city sewer or your septic. That is not a plunger job.

• More than one drain is slow or gurgling at the same time.
• The toilet bubbles, or its water level drops, when the washing machine drains.
• The lowest drains in the house — a basement floor drain, a first-floor shower — back up first.
• You hear gurgling from one drain when you run a different fixture.
• There's a sewage smell, or worst case, waste coming up through a floor drain.

Roots and old pipe: the Central Oregon angle

Around here, tree roots are the number-one main-line villain. The mature-tree streets of Old Bend and the big treed lots out in Deschutes River Woods are classic cases. Roots chase the moisture and nutrients inside a sewer pipe, slip in through the smallest crack or joint, and grow into a mesh that snags everything flushed past. Snaking cuts a channel through them, but they grow back within months.

To truly clear a rooted line you have to strip the pipe wall bare. That's where hydro jetting comes in — a high-pressure jet that scours roots, grease, and scale off the wall instead of just boring through the middle. 1. Keep grease out of the kitchen sink. Let it cool, scrape it into the trash, and wipe greasy pans before they ever hit the water.
2. Put a hair catcher over every shower and tub drain, and empty it weekly. That one screen prevents most bathroom clogs.
3. Flush only the three P's — pee, poop, and toilet paper. "Flushable" wipes are the single most common thing we pull out of blocked toilets and mains.
4. After big cooking jobs, run hot water down the kitchen drain, and once a month treat slow drains with an enzyme cleaner. Enzymes eat organic buildup without the caustic burn that wrecks older pipe.
